The Governor of Ondo, Rotimi Akeredolu, has described the rejection of old notes as flagrant disobedience to law, adding that rejecting the old note will weaken the economy.
He disclosed this on Thursday in a statewide broadcast.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that he decried the rejection of old naira notes.by large numbers of traders and business owners in the state.
He added that the rejection of the old notes would weaken the nation’s economy and cause great harm for local trade and business transaction.
Akeredolu recalled that the supreme Court had ordered that the old notes must Remain the as legal tender in exchange of goods and service in the nation.
He said ” It is therefore a great concern to me today that large section of our people in the state, particularly the traders in our market, taxi and bus drivers, barbers, auto mechanic and artisans are rejecting the old notes, thereby inflicting and sustaining a needless pain in their fellow citizens and customers.
”I therefore, wish to inform you that the rejection of the old N1000, N500 notes by us will do us no good. It will strife our local trade and business transaction, weaken our economy and causes a great harm and avoidable trouble” he added
He appealed to commercial banks to increase the circulation of all currencies at thier disposal and devise a more effective ways to relieve congestion in the banks.
Akeredolu urged the residents of the state to embrace and accept the old note alongside the new notes stipulated by law.
He said ”I hereby use this opportunity to appeal to you all my good people of Ondo state to embrace and accept the old notes stipulated by law, let us not create a needless tension over the matter please collect, spend and exchange the old note without hindrance”.
