Reps Launch Probe Into Alleged N6bn Police Contract Scandal

The House of Representatives has initiated a formal investigation into an alleged N6 billion contract scandal involving the Nigerian Police Force’s Procurement Department.

The decision followed a motion of urgent national importance moved on Thursday by Hon. Ibe Osonwa, representing Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency of Abia State, during plenary in Abuja.

Osonwa alleged that the Police Procurement Department illegally awarded a N6 billion contract for uniforms to Crown Natures Ltd. by fragmenting the deal into 66 smaller contracts.

This, he said, was a deliberate attempt to sidestep the Public Procurement Act of 2007.

“The Nigerian Police Force Procurement Department is alleged to have breached procurement laws by splitting a contract for uniforms into 66 parts—clearly designed to circumvent the legal threshold,” the lawmaker said.

He further expressed concerns that such irregularities erode public trust and violate Section 214 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which outlines the responsibilities of the Nigeria Police Force.

Osonwa also decried a pattern of awarding sensitive arms procurement contracts to private firms in violation of due process, describing it as a threat to national security.

“The implications are not just financial improprieties; they directly undermine our internal security architecture,” he added.

In response, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, referred the motion to the Committees on Public Accounts and Public Procurement for further legislative scrutiny and action.

The development follows earlier petitions by civil society organisations to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) demanding accountability on the matter.
