The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has revealed that the 10th House passed 89 bills addressing critical governance, security, and economic issues within its first year.
He disclosed this on Saturday during a workshop organized for the House of Representatives Press Corps in Kaduna.
Abbas, reflecting on the performance of the lawmakers over 17 months, described the achievements as significant, citing major legislative advancements across priority areas.
“Our One-Year performance assessment scorecard reveals remarkable achievements, including passing 89 bills across our priority areas,” Abbas said.
Some notable bills passed include the Electric Power Sector Reform (Amendment) Bill, 2023; the Federal Audit Service Bill, 2023; the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons Bill, 2023; the Armed Forces Act (Amendment) Bill, 2023; and the Student Loans (Access to Higher Education) Act, 2024.
“These laws address critical aspects of governance, security, and economic reform,” he added.
Legislative Engagement Beyond Bills
Abbas emphasized that the House had also undertaken initiatives to deepen public engagement and strengthen the legislative process. Key initiatives included the National Dialogue on State Policing, discussions on Nigeria’s security challenges, a retreat on the effective implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), and dialogues on tax reform modernization.
Other activities include the Citizens’ Town Hall on the 2024 Appropriation Bill and pre-legislative presentations of tax reform bills, aimed at fostering inclusive and participatory governance.
“These engagements underscore our commitment to ensuring that governance is inclusive, participatory, and responsive to the needs of all Nigerians,” Abbas said.
Addressing the role of the media, Abbas urged journalists to exercise caution in reporting legislative activities to avoid misinformation that could misrepresent the House’s efforts.
In a separate announcement, Abbas revealed the establishment of four new tertiary institutions in Zaria, which include a federal college of education, a college of health sciences, a National Open University campus, and a college of legal studies.
He said these institutions would bolster the region’s educational infrastructure and provide essential resources for development.
The speaker’s remarks highlighted the House’s commitment to impactful legislation and its broader efforts to address Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges.
