Angry residents on Saturday disrupted a political rally organised by the City Boy Movement in Owerri, the Imo State capital, carting away empowerment materials meant for distribution to participants at the event held in support of President Bola Tinubu.
The rally, organised by supporters of the President under the platform of the City Boy Movement, was intended to mobilise grassroots support for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
However, the gathering descended into chaos after some aggrieved residents reportedly stormed the venue, creating panic and forcing several attendees to flee.
Witnesses said the event initially attracted a large crowd but the situation quickly turned rowdy amid what they described as poor crowd control.
Videos circulating on social media showed dozens of participants running from the venue while others scrambled to grab items meant for distribution as part of an empowerment programme.
Some individuals were seen carrying away tailoring machines, refrigerators and other materials believed to have been prepared for beneficiaries.
The entire area reportedly became disorderly within minutes, with loud shouting and pushing as people struggled either to escape the commotion or secure some of the items.
The City Boy Movement is among several political support groups mobilising backing for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, although the President has yet to formally declare his intention to seek a second term.
As of the time of filing this report, organisers of the rally had yet to issue an official statement on the disruption.
Security agencies in Imo State also had not commented on the incident, while it remained unclear whether anyone sustained injuries during the chaos.
