Retired Navy Commodore Kunle Olawunmi, a former Deputy Director of Defence Administration at the Defence Headquarters, has been honored with the prestigious Gani Fawehinmi Integrity Award for Most Valuable Whistle-Blower.
The award, organized by the Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA), was presented during the 7th edition of the Gani Fawehinmi Impact and Integrity Awards (GFIIA) held at Shoregate Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos.
Commodore Olawunmi gained national attention in 2021 when he publicly criticized the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
He alleged that the State Security Services had intelligence on individuals funding Boko Haram but failed to act due to a lack of support from the presidency.
Presenting the award, Dr. Sina Odugbemi, a Strategic Communication Specialist based in London, commended Olawunmi for his courage and commitment to the values of integrity and public impact upheld by the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi.
Now an Associate Professor of Global Counter-Terrorism at Chrisland University, Abeokuta, Olawunmi was recognized for embodying the principles of integrity and advocacy that the award seeks to celebrate.
Speaking after the event, Commodore Olawunmi expressed gratitude to Nigerians for acknowledging his contributions.
“I am deeply honored to receive this recognition. It is a testament to the importance of speaking truth to power and upholding justice,” he said.
The event, attended by notable figures from various sectors, highlighted the enduring legacy of Chief Gani Fawehinmi in promoting accountability and integrity in Nigeria.
