Ribadu Denies Existence of Foreign Military Base In Nigeria Amid Niger Tensions

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, has dismissed allegations of foreign military presence in Nigeria, describing them as baseless and misleading.

Ribadu’s remarks were made in response to claims by Abdourahamane Tchiani, the military leader of Niger Republic, who accused Nigeria of collaborating with France to destabilize his country.

Tchiani’s allegations come amid rising tensions between Niger and Nigeria, following Niger’s decision—alongside Mali and Burkina Faso—to withdraw from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Speaking during an interview with BBC Hausa on Wednesday, Ribadu categorically refuted Tchiani’s assertions, emphasizing that Nigeria harbors no foreign military bases. He challenged journalists to verify the claims independently.

“There is no doubt that the President of Niger knows Nigeria very well, but I want you, as journalists, to go to the places he mentioned and see for yourself, or ask the residents of the places if there are any foreigners, let alone soldiers from other countries,” Ribadu said.

He urged the Nigerien authorities to shift their focus to addressing shared security challenges, particularly the activities of Lakurawa, a terrorist group threatening the stability of both nations.

“The leaders of the military regime in Niger should understand that we, Nigeria, are not a problem for them. These terrorists, whom we are fighting, are our problem. We should confront them together,” the NSA added.

Ribadu further reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to maintaining cooperative relations with Niger, describing the two countries as “brothers” whose unity is essential for regional peace and development.

“We will continue to work with the Niger Republic because the two countries and their peoples are brothers. Both should unite for the development of their respective societies,” he said.

The remarks come at a time when the Sahel region faces escalating insecurity, necessitating stronger bilateral and regional partnerships to combat terrorism and foster stability.
