The newly appointed sole administrator of Rivers State, Ibok-Ete Ibas, has declared a zero-tolerance stance on lawlessness, warning that his administration will not condone any attempt to sabotage the state’s peace and stability.
Speaking in a state-wide broadcast on Thursday in Port Harcourt, Ibas emphasized that his primary mandate is to restore law and order while laying the foundation for the return of democratic governance.
“Let me be clear, under my leadership, civil liberties and fundamental human rights will be respected and protected. The rule of law will remain sacrosanct,” he asserted.
Ibas, a retired naval chief, was appointed as sole administrator following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the state assembly members amid a deepening political crisis.
Addressing concerns over security and governance, Ibas warned individuals or groups attempting to destabilize the state for personal or political gain.
“Those who seek to sabotage the social or economic stability of Rivers State, disrupt national infrastructure, or cause chaos for selfish ends will find no tolerance for their actions,” he said.
He stressed that his administration would not allow violence or disorder to thrive, adding that security agencies have been directed to remain neutral and uphold the rights of all citizens while maintaining order.
Dismissing fears of partisanship, Ibas assured Rivers residents that he is not aligned with any faction in the state’s prolonged political turmoil.
He reiterated that his role is strictly to stabilize the polity and create conditions for democratic institutions to function properly.
“As a son of the Niger Delta, I recognize the weight of this moment, the expectations of the people, and the challenges that lie ahead. This is not a task for one man alone.
Success will depend on the collective effort of all – political leaders, elders, traditional rulers, youth, women, faith leaders, the media, and civil society,” he stated.
Expressing gratitude to President Tinubu and the National Assembly for their support, Ibas pledged to carry out his duties with fairness and dedication.
He urged residents to collaborate in efforts to restore peace and governance, ensuring that Rivers State moves past its current political crisis.
