In a landmark peace meeting orchestrated by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has been mandated to re-present the 2024 budget to the full House of Assembly.
The peace talks, attended by key stakeholders including Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike, former governor Sir Peter Odili, and Vice President Kashim Shettima, aimed at resolving the longstanding political crisis in the state.
The core resolutions from the meeting included an immediate withdrawal of all legal actions related to the political impasse in Rivers State.
Additionally, the impeachment proceedings initiated against Governor Fubara were to be dropped, paving the way for recognition of the leadership of the Rivers State House of Assembly led by Martin Amaewhule, along with the 27 members who resigned from the PDP.
The remunerations and benefits of all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, as well as their staff, were to be reinstated without interference from the Governor.
The Assembly was granted the autonomy to choose its location for legislative activities, free from executive interference. Governor Fubara was directed to re-present the state budget to a properly constituted House of Assembly.
Furthermore, the resolution advocated for the resubmission of names of commissioners who resigned due to the political crisis for approval by the House of Assembly.
Importantly, the dissolution of local government administration was declared null and void, with a firm stance against the recognition of a caretaker committee for local governments in Rivers State.
Significantly, the resolutions were signed by key figures including Governor Fubara, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Odu, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Speaker of the Rivers State Assembly Amaewhule, PDP Chairman Aaron Chukwuemeka, and APC Chairman Tony Okocha.
The peace accord marks a crucial turning point in Rivers State’s political landscape, as rival factions come together under the guidance of national leaders to restore stability and ensure the smooth functioning of the state’s governance institutions.
The reinstatement of democratic processes, withdrawal of legal actions, and recognition of the Assembly’s leadership signal a commitment to fostering unity and progress in the region.
