Suspected armed robbers have shot dead the Director of Finance at the Governor’s office, Oke-Mosan, Ogun State, Taiwo Oyekanmi.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the daring robbery unfolded as Oyekanmi, having withdrawn an undisclosed sum from a Fidelity bank branch in Abeokuta, was ambushed on his way back to the office.
Sources report that five hooded gunmen intercepted Oyekanmi’s homemade bullion van while it ascended the overhead bridge at Kuto.
PLATFORM TIMES further leatned that without warning, the gunmen opened fire on the accountant, leaving him with fatal injuries.
The assailants, reported to have armed with a sledgehammer, forcibly broke into the bullion van and made off with the government’s funds.
Oyekanmi and other aides, who sustained gunshot wounds during the attack, were swiftly transported to the State General Hospital, Ijaye.
Tragically, Oyekanmi succumbed to his injuries, marking a devastating loss for the Ogun State Government.
PLATFORM TIMES further gathered that the police escort, normally assigned to the accountant, was absent, having received permission to attend to personal matters.
The Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi, visited Oyekanmi’s residence to extend condolences to the grieving family.
Commissioner of Police in the state, Abiodun Alamutu, confirmed the incident, stating that the robbery occurred after the funds’ withdrawal.
The assailants, numbering five,reportedly blocked the bullion van on the bridge, unleashing a barrage of gunfire and using a sledgehammer to access the money.
Alamutu emphasized that the police are actively pursuing leads, including obtaining CCTV footage from the bank.
He revealed that measures are in place to identify the culprits, coordinating efforts to block exits from the state. The robbers’ use of hoods adds an additional layer of difficulty to their identification.
