In a time when identity is fluid and cultures are quickly dissolving into a global blend, there is a silent crisis unfolding among African children and families — a crisis of disconnection, of loss, and of cultural amnesia.
It’s a crisis that has left many children struggling to define who they are, where they come from, or what values they represent.
In 2025, a group of concerned educators, parents, creatives, and nation-builders are taking a stand — not with outrage, but with purpose, pride, and proactive strategy.
Welcome to the ROOTED Conference — a groundbreaking cultural and identity experience that will gather children of all ages, teachers, religious institutions, community leaders, parents, and change-makers under one powerful banner: Reclaiming Our Roots to Secure Our Future.
ROOTED: The Identity & Heritage Conference for Children, Teens & Parents holds on Saturday, August 23, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Guiding Light Assembly, Layi Ajayi Bembe Street, Parkview Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos.
ROOTED 2025 is not just another event. It is a movement. A revolution of the mind, a restoration of pride, and a revival of the African spirit. At its core, the ROOTED Conference is about answering a simple but urgent question:
“Who are we — and who are we becoming?”Too many African children today speak in accents they don’t understand, know more about British kings than Benin bronzes, celebrate Halloween but have never heard of Egungun, and are embarrassed by the aroma of Egusi soup while celebrating Tikka Masala on TikTok.
They whisper their traditional names in shame, shorten “Chimamanda” to “Chi” or “Chichi” to make it easier for non-Africans to pronounce — while learning to say “Saoirse,” “Siobhan,” and
“Tchaikovsky” without blinking. We are losing our language. We are losing our foods. We are losing our stories. And with each loss, we lose a part of ourselves.
It’s no wonder so many of our children are battling an identity crisis — because how can they know what to be proud of if they don’t know what they come from?ROOTED 2025 aims to address these pressing issues by bringing the conversation back home — to our schools, our homes, our churches, our mosques, and our communities.
It is an invitation to remember, reconnect, and rebuild. This conference is especially timely in an age where our children are digital natives but cultural strangers.
They sing along to global pop hits, but don’t know their national anthems. They wear Western fashion with confidence but squirm at the thought of donning Ankara or Adire to a formal event. We are at risk of raising children who are educated — but unrooted.
