The leadership and members of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) in Ogun State, have thrown their support for second-term ambition of the union’s chairman, Akibu Titilayo, popularly known as Efele.
At the union’s last general meeting for 2024,the motion to support Titilayo’s second term was moved by the state’sFirst Vice Chairman, Comrade Monsuru Owookade, and seconded by the Publicity Secretary, Comrade Adeyemi Adeleye.

Speaking with newsmen after the meeting, the Secretary of the RTEAN in the State, Tiwalade Akingbade, expressed strong support for the second-term ambition of the union’s chairman.
Akingbade highlighted the chairman’s achievements and leadership qualities that have endeared him to members.
According to Akingbade, under Titilayo’s leadership, the association has experienced significant growth.
He noted that out of the 50 executives in the state, only three are yet to receive official cars provided free of charge by the chairman.
He also lauded Titilayo’s commitment to addressing members’ concerns and his no-nonsense approach to ensuring fairness within the union.
“Members are happy with the chairman’s policies and decisions.
“He carries the entire executive team along, listens to members’ grievances, and takes swift action to resolve issues.
“He has moved the association to greater heights, making him deserving of a second term,” Akingbade said.
In his acceptance speech, Titilayo pledged to increase his support for members and urged them to foster unity within the union. “Let us cooperate and work as a team as we enter the new year,” he said.
… FRSC Advocates Safer Driving During Ember Months
At the meeting, Dr. Adelaja Ogungbemi, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Deputy Corps Commander in charge of operations in Ogun State, emphasized the need for road safety during the festive season.
Speaking on the theme of the FRSC’s December campaign, he called for collective efforts to minimize road accidents.
“We are advocating zero deaths during the ember months. Passengers must speak out against dangerous driving, as most road fatalities involve passengers. Drivers must also adhere to designated speed limits, depending on the road,” Ogungbemi said.
Addressing the use of second-hand (Tokunbo) tyres, Ogungbemi warned against their dangers. “Tokunbo tyres are unreliable.
They are fairly used, and their safety cannot be guaranteed. We encourage the use of new tyres and will continue sensitizing drivers about this.”
Responding to Ogungbemi’s concerns, Akingbade acknowledged the challenges posed by the high cost of spare parts and tyres, noting that locally produced tyres are often unreliable despite their exorbitant prices.
“It’s disheartening that new tyres, manufactured at outrageous prices, often fail quicker than Tokunbo tyres.
“A 15-rim tyre now costs ₦80,000 to ₦90,000, yet it doesn’t last. This situation is hitting commercial vehicle owners hard.
“We call on authorities to address these issues and ensure the production of durable tyres,” Akingbade said.
Akingbade advised members to prioritize safety and avoid rushing during the festive season.
“What we cannot achieve from January to December cannot be forced into December. Hard work pays, and it’s important to take things gently. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility,” he said.
