Residents of Alapo Compound in the Edun area of Ilorin, Kwara State, were thrown into mourning on Friday after a middle-aged man, identified as Kazeem, allegedly under the influence of drugs, drowned in a well during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the 43-year-old reportedly began displaying strange behaviour shortly after returning from the Eid prayer ground.
Eyewitnesses said his movements were erratic and suspicious, raising fears that he might have taken a psychoactive substance, popularly known as ‘Colorado’ or ‘Colo’.
Efforts by neighbours to restrain him proved futile as he suddenly jumped into a domestic well located within the compound.
An eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “We noticed he wasn’t acting normal. He kept moving around in a strange way. Before we knew it, he ran towards the well and jumped in. We were all shocked.”
Following failed rescue attempts by residents, a distress call was placed to the Kwara State Fire Service.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the state fire service, Hassan Adekunle, in a statement issued on Saturday, said the service received an emergency call around 10:29 a.m.
“Our operatives responded immediately and carried out the recovery operation. Unfortunately, the man was already dead by the time we arrived,” Adekunle stated.
He added that preliminary reports indicated that the deceased had consumed a hard drug known locally as ‘Colo’ shortly before the incident.
The body was subsequently handed over to officers from the ‘C’ Division of the Nigeria Police Force, Ilorin, pending formal identification and further investigation.
Reacting to the incident, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade Olumuyiwa, expressed concern over the increasing abuse of illicit drugs, particularly during festive seasons.
He warned against the use of psychoactive substances, stressing that such behaviour often ends in tragedy.
“This is a sad reminder of the dangers associated with drug abuse. People must prioritise their health and safety, especially during periods meant for celebration,” he said.
