SDP Leadership Crisis Deepens as State Chairmen Back Gabam’s Suspension

The crisis rocking the Social Democratic Party (SDP) took a new dimension on Friday as 22 state chairmen of the party declared their support for the suspension of the national chairman, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam.

The chairmen, who are also statutory members of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), threw their weight behind the action of the National Working Committee (NWC) during a press conference in Abuja.

The endorsement, they said, was necessary to protect the integrity and internal democracy of the party.

Speaking on behalf of the Forum of SDP State Chairmen, Mr. Femi Adeniyi Ferrari said the decision to suspend Gabam, along with the party’s national auditor, Clarkson Nnadi, and the national youth leader, Ogbonna Chukwuma, reflected the popular demand from party members across the country.

“We fully support the National Working Committee’s decision to suspend the national chairman, Shehu Gabam, and other affected officials. This aligns with the sentiments of our members at the grassroots,” Ferrari stated.

He noted that the party could not afford to compromise its founding principles of transparency, accountability, and social justice at a time when the country is grappling with governance failures.

Ferrari stressed that the party remains committed to presenting itself as a credible alternative in the country’s political landscape, insisting that the ongoing internal reforms were aimed at strengthening its democratic structure and restoring public confidence.

While acknowledging the tension within the party, the chairmen maintained that there was no leadership vacuum, adding that the SDP remains united in its resolve to build a corruption-free political platform.

The endorsement comes days after a violent protest erupted at the party’s national secretariat in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, where aggrieved members pulled down the main gate while the NWC meeting was underway.

The protest prompted the intervention of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, which later took control of the premises to restore order.

The ongoing crisis has raised concerns among stakeholders about the stability of the party ahead of upcoming political engagements.
