An Abeokuta-based philanthropist and businesswoman, Mrs Modupe Idowu, has brought relief and joy to over 200 vulnerable children and elderly residents as the TemmyMo Welfare Initiative hosted the fourth edition of its annual Christmas party in Ogun State.
The outreach, held on Thursday, in Abeokuta, saw beneficiaries receive bags of rice, assorted food items, gifts and cash support, as part of efforts to cushion the impact of the prevailing economic hardship and make the Yuletide meaningful for the less privileged.
Mrs Idowu, a retired journalist, said the initiative was founded in memory of her late husband, Mr Temitope Idowu, noting that the name “TemmyMo” was derived from both their names—Temmy for Temitope and Mo for Modupe—reflecting what she described as a lifelong commitment to compassion and service.
Speaking at the event, she said the harsh economic realities facing many Nigerian families made it imperative for those who are privileged to support others.
“We know how the country is now. Many people are hungry and some children are already out of school. If God has blessed you, you should bless others. Don’t be greedy—extend a hand of love,” she said.
She disclosed that although the programme was initially planned for 200 children, the organisers had to cater for more beneficiaries who turned up for the event.
“I planned for 200 children, but more people came and I couldn’t send them back. This is the season of love. Whoever is around, whether children or the elderly, we celebrate together,” Mrs Idowu added.
The philanthropist traced her passion for humanitarian service to her childhood experiences and years as a Sunday school teacher, where she encountered children from rural communities struggling with hunger.
“I saw children who would complain of stomach pain because they were hungry. Once you feed them, they start playing again.
“That experience stayed with me, and I promised God that if He helped me, I would use my Christmas to celebrate the less privileged. I have been doing that, and I will continue,” she said.
She also acknowledged the support of friends and associates who contributed food items and other materials distributed at the event.
“I didn’t do this alone. Many people supported this programme in different ways. May God bless everyone who contributed,” she added.
The event featured music, entertainment, shared meals and the presentation of gifts, with beneficiaries and their guardians expressing appreciation for the initiative, which they said brought hope and relief during the festive season.
The TemmyMo Welfare Initiative has, over the years, sustained its annual Christmas outreach in Abeokuta as part of its broader commitment to humanitarian service and community development.
