Security Operatives Engage In Mistaken Gun Duel In Anambra Ahead Of Senator Ubah’s Burial

NNEWI, Anambra – A clash between security operatives in Nnewi, Anambra State, on Wednesday caused panic as two agencies mistook each other for members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), leading to a gun duel.

The incident, which occurred at Izuchukwu Junction on the Nnobi/Nnewi road, involved a misunderstanding that escalated into an exchange of gunfire, Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed.

Contrary to widespread speculations, Ikenga stated that the confrontation was not linked to any attempt to disrupt the burial of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who passed away on July 27 in London.

“The command is aware of the shooting incident where security operatives mistook police officers as unfriendly forces and opened fire on them,” Ikenga told journalists in Awka.

“We emphasise that the attack on the operatives was not from non-state actors or any attempt to disrupt the burial of the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.”

According to Ikenga, the incident was sparked by the pursuit of a suspect, which led to an unfortunate escalation.

“Preliminary information revealed that security operatives trailed a suspect to a checkpoint before the gunfire ensued.

During the shootout, bullets struck the fuel tank of a Toyota Venza Sedan carrying the operatives, causing it to be razed,” he explained.

Two innocent passersby sustained injuries during the exchange and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The police spokesperson assured residents that the situation is under control, urging calm as investigations continue. Joint security forces have been deployed to maintain order throughout the burial ceremonies scheduled for November 22 in Otolo, Nnewi, Ubah’s hometown.

The late senator, a prominent figure in the community, is expected to be laid to rest amid tight security to forestall any further disturbances.
