The Nigerian Senate has strongly condemned a recent protest in Ghana where demonstrators reportedly demanded the expulsion of Nigerians, warning that such actions threaten African unity and undermine long-standing diplomatic ties between the two West African countries.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations, described the protest as “deeply disturbing” and “contrary to the ideals of African brotherhood.”
The protest, which gained traction on social media following the circulation of a viral video, showed a group of Ghanaians chanting anti-Nigerian slogans and calling for Nigerians to leave their country.
The protesters accused Nigerians of engaging in acts they claim violate Ghanaian cultural and societal norms.
Reacting to the development, the Senate Committee urged Ghanaian authorities and the public to exercise restraint, noting that Nigeria and Ghana share deep historical, economic, and diplomatic ties as prominent members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
“The two countries must keep the flame of brotherhood alive,” the Committee stressed. “Nigeria and Ghana should be at the forefront of promoting regional peace, integration, and cooperation in line with the ECOWAS charter.”
The Committee also commended the prompt interventions of the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, for what it described as “timely and diplomatic handling of the situation.”
It further acknowledged the efforts of both the Nigerian and Ghanaian High Commissioners in engaging diplomatically to defuse tensions and protect the welfare of Nigerians residing in Ghana.
While assuring Nigerian citizens in Ghana of their safety, the Senate urged them to remain calm and law-abiding, stating that “appropriate diplomatic channels are being effectively explored” to ensure their protection and the resolution of the situation.
