In a heartfelt gesture of compassion and social responsibility, Otunba Olanrewaju Shofoluwe, Chairman of the Otunba Lanre Shofoluwe Foundation, has emphasized the invaluable role of senior citizens in nation-building.
Speaking at a palliative distribution event held on Monday, December 23, 2024, in Igbehin, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Otunba Shofoluwe described the elderly as pivotal to societal progress, urging more support for their well-being.
The event, organized as part of the Foundation’s 2024 Christmas celebration, saw over 50 senior citizens receive cash gifts and other palliatives.
Distinguished personalities, local chiefs, and members of the press graced the occasion, which aimed to appreciate the contributions of elderly citizens to their communities.
In his address, Otunba Shofoluwe highlighted the critical role of senior citizens in various sectors, noting that their wisdom and experience are foundational to societal stability and growth.
“Senior citizens are a key pillar of any society,” he stated. “Our country can never progress if proper care is not given to the aged.
“They deserve opportunities to realize their full potential and continue contributing meaningfully to national development.”
Otunba Shofoluwe, who hails from Igbehin in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, expressed his commitment to supporting the elderly through initiatives aimed at alleviating their burdens.
He emphasized the need for collective effort, stating, “Nigeria will be better with the support of all citizens.”
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Wahab Saidatu, expressed gratitude to the Foundation, describing the gesture as a beacon of hope.
“Paying back to the society is the key to progress because the government cannot do it all,” she said.
As the event coincided with the festive season, Otunba Shofoluwe extended warm greetings to Christians worldwide, urging them to remain united and steadfast in faith.
He called for a spirit of neighborly love and mutual support to navigate the country’s economic challenges.
