The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has dragged the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET) to court over the alleged mismanagement or diversion of N128 billion from public coffers.
Kolawole Oluwadare, Deputy Director of SERAP, disclosed on Sunday that the civil society group filed the suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday under suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/143/2026.
The lawsuit seeks an order of mandamus compelling the defendants to fully account for the missing funds.
According to SERAP, the allegations are detailed in the latest annual report of the Auditor-General, released on September 9, 2025.
The group argued that widespread corruption in the power sector has contributed to the persistent breakdown of transmission lines and frequent grid collapses, including the first national blackout of 2026 witnessed last week.
“Our interest in this case is anchored on the legitimate public concern over accountability in the power sector.
“Nigerians continue to bear the brunt of grand corruption in this critical sector, which hampers access to regular and uninterrupted electricity supply,” SERAP said in a statement.
The suit demands that Mr. Adelabu and NBET disclose the full names, official positions, and offices of all public officers involved in authorizing or approving the release of the N128 billion.
SERAP further emphasized that securing the court’s intervention would not only enhance transparency but also help curb corruption and improve the reliability of electricity supply across Nigeria.
The Ministry of Power and NBET are yet to respond to the allegations as of Sunday evening.
This latest development comes amid growing public scrutiny over fund management in Nigeria’s power sector, a sector long criticized for inefficiency, infrastructural decay, and lack of accountability.
