The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has announced its intention to take legal action against the administration of President Bola Tinubu over the increase in electricity tariffs.
This decision follows the recent approval by the Nigerian government of a significant tariff hike, raising the cost to N225 ($0.15) per kilowatt-hour for Band A electricity consumers.
Band A consumers, defined as those enjoying 20 hours of electricity supply per day, represent approximately 15 percent of Nigeria’s 12 million electricity customers.
The Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Musliu Oseni, disclosed this development at a press briefing in Abuja.
Notably, NERC has also downgraded certain customers from Band A to Band B due to non-compliance with the required hours of electricity provision by distribution companies.
However, the tariff revision is stated to not affect customers in other bands.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the tariff hike, SERAP released a statement on Wednesday condemning the increase.
The organization emphasized the prevailing challenging economic conditions in the country and highlighted an ongoing lawsuit concerning the matter.
In its statement, SERAP called upon the Tinubu administration to retract the tariff hike until the pending lawsuit is heard and resolved.
The group stressed the importance of upholding the integrity of the judicial process and respecting the rule of law.
“We are legally challenging the Tinubu administration’s unilateral decision to raise electricity tariffs from N66 to N225, despite the economic hardships faced by citizens and the existing legal proceedings on this matter,” SERAP stated.
“The Tinubu administration must immediately reverse the seemingly unjustifiable electricity tariff increase pending the adjudication of our lawsuit.
