Seven inmates have escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesa, Osun State, following the collapse of the facility’s perimeter wall due to heavy rainfall.

Spokesman for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Abubakar Umar, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja.

He disclosed that the escape occurred around 2:00 a.m. and was facilitated by a breach in the security structure of the facility.

According to Umar, the Controller General of the Service, Sylvester Nwakuche, has ordered an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the jailbreak and directed the launch of a manhunt to apprehend the fleeing inmates.

“The NCoS is working closely with other security agencies and local community leaders to track and return the escapees to lawful custody.

Measures are also being put in place to strengthen the security architecture of the facility to forestall further breaches,” Umar stated.

The Service has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or information that could aid in the recapture of the escapees.

The public can contact the NCoS Response Desk via the following numbers: 07087086005, 09060004598, and 08075050006.

The Service reaffirmed its commitment to public safety and the maintenance of secure custodial environments across the country.
