At least seven members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) have lost their lives, while four others sustained injuries in a tragic road accident along the Gombe–Yola highway on Saturday.
The ill-fated vehicle, reportedly owned by the NUJ Gombe State Council, was transporting journalists from Gombe State to Yola, Adamawa State, when the crash occurred shortly after departure.
A photograph obtained by PLATFORM TIMES shows the NUJ bus severely mangled, highlighting the severity of the incident.
Sources revealed that the journalists were returning from a wedding ceremony in Gombe South Senatorial District, held in honour of a colleague who works with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).
The injured were rushed to a nearby medical facility, where they are receiving treatment.
Details on the cause of the crash remain unclear, and authorities are yet to issue an official statement.
The incident has plunged the Gombe State media community into mourning, with colleagues describing the event as a devastating loss to the profession.
The NUJ has called on relevant authorities to investigate the accident promptly and ensure measures are put in place to prevent such tragedies in the future.
