Prominent Kaduna-based Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has openly contradicted the federal government’s proclamation of victory over the Boko Haram insurgency.
Sheikh Gumi declared that the ongoing struggle with Boko Haram stems from deep-rooted ideological differences, cautioning that despite military endeavors, the group’s extremist doctrine persists.
During an appearance on the radio program “Frontline” on Eagle 102.5 FM in Ilese-Ijebu, Ogun state, Sheikh Gumi lambasted the government for its failure to accurately diagnose the underlying causes of insecurity in the Northern region.
He pointed out a deficiency in local insights and accused some officials of exploiting the nation’s predicament for personal gain.
This dissenting viewpoint highlights the enduring challenges in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.
Sheikh Gumi asserted that no one in the country is immune to insecurity, which has been allowed to fester for an extended period.
He urged the government to reassess its approach, advocating for a localized solution and stressing the importance of engaging all stakeholders, including bandits, akin to the successful strategy employed with the Niger Delta militants.
According to Sheikh Gumi, merely eliminating Boko Haram fighters through military action is insufficient, as the underlying extremist ideology remains intact.
He emphasized the necessity of countering this ideology to foster peace and democracy within Nigeria.
Critically, Sheikh Gumi highlighted systemic issues plaguing the country’s security apparatus, including a lack of local involvement in decision-making and the exploitation of funds intended for security purposes.
He emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach that addresses the grievances of marginalized communities, particularly those deprived of basic social services.
On the contentious issue of negotiating with bandits, Sheikh Gumi proposed dialogue as a means to secure the safe release of captives without resorting to financial transactions.
He portrayed bandits as marginalized individuals lacking access to education, infrastructure, and water, suggesting that addressing these underlying issues could contribute to lasting peace.
