Otunba Segun Showunmi, the convener of the National Opposition Movement Coalition (NOMC), has urged Nigerians to embrace unity and actively participate in the democratic process.
Speaking at the North East Town Hall meeting in Bauchi on Thursday, December 12, 2024, Showunmi emphasized that fostering national cohesion and revitalizing democracy are crucial for Nigeria’s future.
In his address, Showunmi called on authorities to create platforms for inclusive civic engagement while challenging Nigerians to reject divisive tendencies.
“The attitude that makes Nigeria seem like it is not one country has to go,” he said.
“This nation is one, and there is enough evidence to prove that. From our culture to our traditions, the similarities outweigh the differences.”
He further described language as merely a tool for communication, underscoring the importance of celebrating Nigeria’s unity rather than its diversity.
The event, part of a series of zonal town hall meetings organized by NOMC, aimed to stimulate discussions on democracy, governance, and national development.
Showunmi lamented declining voter turnout and the prevalence of vote trading, which he said undermines democracy.
“In 2023, despite 93 million registered voters, only 8 million votes were enough to install the president,” he noted.
“This disengagement, coupled with vote buying and selling, erodes the promise of democracy.”
He urged Nigerians to adopt a transformative approach to governance by holding leaders accountable and focusing on solutions. “This is not about political parties,” he clarified.
“While I am a member of the PDP, this movement is about the people and collective action. We must educate ourselves, hold meaningful conversations, and rebuild trust in the democratic system.”
Other speakers at the event echoed Showunmi’s sentiments. Hajiya Maimuna Ahmed, a representative of the National Women PDP Northern Awareness Forum, lauded the initiative’s inclusivity.
She emphasized the need for non-partisan engagement and urged women to take active roles in nation-building.
“This engagement isn’t about partisan politics but about capturing the voice of all Nigerians,” she said. “Women have a crucial role to play in shaping the future of this country.”
Hon. Usman Kafa, a former member of the Gombe State House of Assembly, criticized vote-buying practices and stressed the importance of leadership that prioritizes development.
“This is not the time to exchange votes for foodstuffs,” he said.
“The North East must rise above such politics and advocate for good governance.”
Showunmi praised Bauchi State’s Governor for his support and commended the state’s hospitality and infrastructure development.
He announced plans for upcoming town hall meetings in Kano and other southern zones, reiterating the need for nationwide dialogue.
Describing democracy as the “greatest hope for the poor,” he urged Nigerians to reclaim their political power through informed participation.
“The power of one vote can transform lives and elevate communities. We cannot afford to remain passive or sell our future for temporary gains,” he stated.
Showunmi, a former spokesperson to Vice President Atiku Abubakar, reaffirmed his commitment to fostering unity and fighting tribalism.
