A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former spokesperson to Atiku Abubakar, Otunba Segun Showunmi, has congratulated the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, on his 60th birthday, while urging him to intensify efforts on environmental reforms in the state.
In a goodwill message personally signed by him on Tuesday, Showunmi commended Sanwo-Olu’s achievements as he begins the final lap of his second term, but stressed the urgent need for the governor to “take off the gloves” and prioritise the sanitisation of Lagos’ built environment.
“Happy Birthday, Gov Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu — not bad for 60. The achievements are undeniable,” Showunmi stated.
“But this is the time to force compliance with the Lagos master plan to ensure that whoever comes after you will not need to apologise for trying to build a modern city.”
He particularly highlighted the work of Lagos Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, calling for his efforts to be placed at the heart of the administration’s final phase.
Showunmi challenged Sanwo-Olu to address environmental violations and restore order in the state’s physical planning. “What must be pulled down should be pulled down. What must be provided for the greater good of the people must be provided,” he said.
Tracing the state’s development trajectory, Showunmi paid tribute to former governors, noting that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu initiated the vision, Babatunde Fashola deepened the framework, and Akinwunmi Ambode extended the agenda into poorer communities.
He said it now falls on Sanwo-Olu to complete the task by ensuring that Lagos sheds the image of a “mega slum” and becomes a city that reflects the aspirations of its people.
“Lagos is not a no man’s land. It is a land for all persons who wish to live and strive in the biggest economic city-state in Africa. The time is now. Sparkle like a diamond,” Showunmi concluded.
Sanwo-Olu, who turns 60 this week, is currently serving his second term as governor of Lagos State.
