Suspected smugglers have launched a violent attack on Nigeria’s Customs Services (NCS) outstation in Yauri, Kebbi State, resulting in the retrieval of 29 bags of seized foreign rice amidst chaos and confrontation.
Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Kebbi State Area Command of the NCS, SC Mohmmed Tajudeen Salisu, revealed that the attack occurred late on Thursday, March 21, 2024, around 2310 hours.
The combined team of Yauri outstation and surveillance had responded to reports of suspected smuggling activity at Yauri Waterside.
Upon arrival, they seized 41 bags of foreign parboiled rice, which were subsequently secured and taken to the outstation.
However, the situation took a violent turn as a mob of aggrieved smugglers mobilized hoodlums to attack the outpost.
The management swiftly contacted the command and other sister agencies for reinforcement, leading to a concerted effort to contain the situation.
Despite these efforts, the Officer in Charge (OiC) sustained a hand injury during the confrontation.
Additionally, one AK47 rifle was briefly seized by the attackers before being retrieved, but the assailants managed to abscond with 29 bags of the seized rice.
The brazenness of the attack extended beyond physical violence, as the mob proceeded to vandalize personal and operational property.
The OiC’s vehicle, as well as essential infrastructure such as air conditioners, chairs, tables, windows, and doors, fell victim to the rampage, disrupting the operations of the outstation.
In response to the escalating tension, the Kebbi State Governor intervened by hosting the Customs Area Controller, Iheanacho Ernest Ojike, to discuss the way forward. Through these efforts, normalcy has since been restored in the area.
The PRO emphasized that the Customs Area Controller has maintained communication with the Commissioner of Police, leading to several arrests and the launch of an investigation aimed at apprehending and prosecuting the perpetrators.
This incident underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in combating smuggling activities and maintaining order in border regions.
