The 3rd Division General Court Martial of the Nigerian Army has sentenced Warrant Officer Danladi Shaggy to 28 years imprisonment for stealing military ammunition and an AK-47 rifle.
The court also dismissed Shaggy and five other soldiers from service for various infractions, while two additional soldiers were sanctioned.
The judgment, delivered on Friday at the Maxwell Khobe Cantonment in Jos, Plateau State, was presided over by Brigadier General Liafis Bello.
The court found the eight soldiers guilty of offenses including theft, selling arms and ammunition, intimidation, and cheating.
Warrant Officer Shaggy was convicted of stealing 3,870 rounds of 7.26 mm ammunition and one AK-47 rifle. He was sentenced to 363 months in prison, equivalent to 28 years.
Additionally, Shaggy was dismissed from service, demoted to the rank of private, and ordered to restitute N5,035,000, the amount he received from selling the stolen ammunition.
The seven other soldiers convicted include Lance Corporal Suleiman Hassan, Private Oluwaseyi Williams, Lance Corporal Abraham Samson, Sergeant Ibrahim Salihu, Sergeant Musa Ibrahim, Sergeant Nicholas Josephat, and Corporal Isa Ibrahim.
These soldiers faced various penalties including dismissal, demotion, and reprimands.
Brigadier General Bello emphasized that the court was convened in accordance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution as amended, the Armed Forces Act (Rules and Procedures) 1972, and other existing laws.
He noted that the court diligently considered all allegations before delivering its verdicts.
The Court Martial was initiated earlier this year by Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, the General Officer Commanding the 3rd Armoured Division of the Nigerian Army.
The proceedings underscore the Nigerian Army’s commitment to maintaining discipline and accountability within its ranks.
