Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State on Saturday accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of unleashing violence during the Anambra South senatorial by-election, alleging that his Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Felix Odimegwu, was physically assaulted.
Soludo, who spoke to journalists shortly after casting his ballot at polling unit 002, Ofiyi Square, Isuofia ward in Aguata Local Government Area, described the incident as “shocking but not unexpected.”
According to him, Odimegwu was attacked at Ezinifite in Nnewi South LGA by thugs allegedly moving around with the APC governorship candidate in the state.
“Just in the last few minutes, I got a terrible report from Nnewi South. My commissioner was in pain and crying that the APC governorship candidate took a truckload of police and thugs, going from one polling unit to another, beating up people, including him,” Soludo said.
He added that such desperation was a sign of a party heading for defeat.
“When you see that you are losing, you begin to unleash violence to disrupt the electoral process. I understand they are even losing in his own ward,” the governor stated.
While condemning the alleged assault, Soludo maintained that the will of the people would prevail.
“Let the people vote and let their votes count. That is all we are asking for,” he stressed.
The governor, however, commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the conduct of the by-election, noting that voting had been peaceful across most polling units.
“I’m glad that so far, the process has been seamless. Reports from around the state show that it has been relatively peaceful, and I’m impressed that people came out to exercise their civic duty,” he said.
The by-election followed the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented Anambra South, in July 2024. Vote counting had begun in several polling units as of press time.
