The political atmosphere in Anambra State took a dramatic turn on Saturday after Nonye Soludo, wife of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, threatened to sue former Senator Uche Ekwunife over allegations of infidelity and involvement in a past administration.
Ekwunife, who is the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming election, had in a viral video accused the Soludos of being part of the government of late Chinwoke Mbadinuju, which she claimed failed Anambra between 1999 and 2003.
Responding in a strongly worded statement, the First Lady described the claims as “malicious and fabricated,” warning that she would head to court if the allegations were not retracted within 72 hours.
“My patience has been tested because my children were dragged into a needless political battle. I have never worked for anyone, never met the late Dr. Mbadinuju, and in my 55 years of life, I have known only one man — Chukwuma Soludo,” she said.
Mrs. Soludo accused Ekwunife of deliberately targeting families of political opponents, stressing that she would not be intimidated.
Going further, the governor’s wife issued an unusual challenge, daring the ex-senator to submit to a DNA test and swear an oath of fidelity before the Catholic Church.
“Since she claims to be a Catholic, I challenge her to join me in swearing an oath of fidelity and chastity before the Blessed Sacrament, alongside our children,” she declared.
She also offered to sponsor DNA tests for both families in three London hospitals, promising to bear all expenses and even reward Ekwunife with a cash gift if the results confirmed her husband as the father of her children.
Dismissing attacks on her husband, Mrs. Soludo described the governor as “too clean and too sophisticated” to be distracted by what she called the “outbursts of frustration” from his opponents.
The Anambra First Lady added that she has lived a private life, never drawn public funds for her office, and had always shunned politics because of the “shameless obscenities” associated with it.
The exchange between both women has further heightened tensions in the state’s political space ahead of the governorship polls, with observers warning that personal attacks may overshadow issues of governance and development.
