In a recent operation in Minna, the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) confiscated expired goods estimated at over N5 million.
These products, including teas, chocolate drinks, juices, yoghurt, biscuits, coffee, margarine, milk, bath soaps, gels, body and face creams, packaged powdered beans, and maize, among others, had expired seven years ago.
Hajiya Hauwa Yusuf, State Coordinator (Niger 1), SON, expressed concern about the high prevalence of expired, uncertified, unregistered, and substandard products in the market.
She emphasized that many of the seized products had been expired for as long as seven years and were still being sold to unsuspecting consumers.
Additionally, officials of SON confiscated water filters and pipes covered in algae at sachet water producers’ premises, ensuring the safety of the public’s water supply.
They also seized stickers from a reputable product that a manufacturer intended to use for marketing fake or substandard products.
Yusuf reassured the public that SON was intensifying its efforts to remove expired and substandard products from the market, emphasizing that only products meeting SON’s standards should be sold.
Alhaji Sale Babaji, Director of the North Central zone of SON, called on the public to report expired or unregistered products in the market, enabling SON to take action against those responsible.
Babaji highlighted the challenges SON officers face in carrying out confiscations and urged the public to cooperate.
Furthermore, SON encouraged consumers to choose only SON-certified made-in-Nigeria products with the MANCAP logo and urged manufacturers in Niger to submit their products for MANCAP certification to ensure quality and avoid legal action.
This crackdown on expired products underscores SON’s commitment to protecting consumers from potentially harmful and substandard goods.
