A dramatic family feud has surfaced in Kano State as a young man, Muhammad Shaddadu, has dragged his father, Malam Shaddadu, before a Shari’a Court sitting in Danbare for allegedly selling his house without his consent.
The plaintiff, Muhammad, told the court that his father had previously purchased two tricycles for his half-brothers to support their livelihoods.
However, tragedy struck when one of them was attacked and killed by suspected hoodlums who also made away with his tricycle.
According to Muhammad, his father wrongly blamed him for the unfortunate incident and even took him to court on what he described as “false allegations,” leading to his remand in prison for a period.
“I was shocked that my own father accused me of having a hand in my brother’s death. He took me to court, and I was remanded for something I knew nothing about. When the truth came out, I was discharged and acquitted,” Muhammad told the court.
He further alleged that while he was still in custody, his father secretly sold his house, believing he would never regain his freedom.
“After my release, I returned home only to discover that the house I built had been sold by my father. I could not believe that a parent could do that to his own child,” he added emotionally.
When the charge was read, Malam Shaddadu, the defendant, denied the allegation and pleaded not guilty to the charge of unauthorized sale of property.
Presiding Judge, Malam Munzali Idris Gwadabe, in his preliminary ruling, described the case as a “deeply rooted family conflict” and emphasized the importance of reconciliation over litigation.
“The matter before this court is a family dispute that requires careful handling. It would be more beneficial for both parties to seek reconciliation rather than prolonged court battles,” the judge said.
He subsequently transferred the case to the Court of Arbitration for mediation and possible settlement between father and son.
The case has since sparked public interest in Danbare community, with many residents describing it as a “sad reflection” of the growing erosion of family values and communication breakdowns in households.
As at press time, the arbitration proceedings were yet to commence, while both parties have been advised to maintain peace pending resolution.
