The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) in the South-West has called on the region’s governors to set a minimum pension of N60,000 per month, starting from 2026.
Dr. Olusegun Abatan, the union’s Public Relations Officer, disclosed this on Thursday during a briefing in Ibadan on the outcome of a zonal meeting of NUP chairmen and secretaries.
Abatan said pensioners in the region continue to face harsh living conditions, urging state governments to review pensions in line with the forthcoming new minimum wage.
“It is unfortunate that pensioners’ welfare has remained stagnant. Some states, including Ogun, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti, are beginning to improve, while Lagos and Oyo are already attending to pensioners’ needs. With 2026 marking another salary review year, we demand N60,000 as the minimum pension,” he said.
Abatan also called on governors to consider pensioners during budget preparations and ensure their welfare is not sidelined.
On national security, the union expressed concern over the abduction of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the killing of Brig.-Gen. Musa Uba.
He appealed to the federal government to seek broader international support to address security challenges.
He further urged politicians to exercise maturity in their actions, warning that political crises disproportionately affect ordinary citizens who lack the mobility and resources to escape turmoil.
