The Southern Governors’ Forum on Monday, commenced a  closed-door meeting  shortly after their arrival in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.

The gathering, held at the presidential lodge in Ibara housing, marks the first convergence of the governors following the death of the former Chairman, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, in December 2023.

As of the commencement of the meeting, eleven governors had already arrivedwitj two deputies .

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, who also serves as the Chairman of the Southwest Governors’ Forum, led the early arrivals.

He was warmly received by the host governor, Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State.

Among the governors present were Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Alex Otti (Abia), Godwin Obaseki (Edo), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), and Bassey Otu (Cross River). Additionally, deputy governors Chinyere Ekomaru (Imo), Monday Onyeme (Delta), and Olayide Adelami (Ondo) are also in attendance.

The agenda of the meeting remains undisclosed, but it is anticipated that the election of a new chairman for the forum will be a central focus.

PLATFORM TIMES reports that the  forum has not elected a new leader since Akeredolu’s passing, and this meeting presents an opportunity for the governors to decide on his successor.

The Southern Governors’ Forum comprises the governors of the 17 southern states of Nigeria.

It serves as a platform for these leaders to discuss and strategize on issues affecting their regions and to present a unified stance on national matters.

The death of Akeredolu left a leadership vacuum in the forum, and today’s meeting could see the emergence of a new chairman who will steer the forum’s activities and initiatives going forward.

As the meeting progresses, the presence of the other six governors is keenly awaited, and the outcomes of their deliberations are anticipated with significant interest.

The decisions made at this convergence are expected to have substantial implications for the political and socio-economic landscape of the southern states.
