In a significant quadrennial event, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, has elected a dynamic ten-member executive committee to lead the union into a new era of progress and advocacy.
PLATFORM TIMES reported that the election was marked by tension, preceding disagreements from a faction reportedly aligned with influential figures within the university who opposed the union’s autonomy.
Held amidst heightened anticipation at the CESAP building, OOU Ago-Iwoye, Dr. Lamina Abiodun secured victory for a second term as Chairperson, garnering 102 votes against his closest contender, Comrade Dr. Kehinde Phillips, who received 70 votes.
The congress, supervised by National Vice-President, West, Dr. Abdulsobur Abdulsalam, and Zonal Women Leader, West, Comrade Yewande Ogunleye, affirmed SSANU OOU’s commitment to democratic processes and smooth leadership transitions.
Dr. Abdulsalam praised the branch for its exemplary conduct and urged the newly elected executives to uphold the union’s values of integrity and member welfare.
During the inauguration ceremony, Dr. Abdulsalam outlined SSANU OOU’s ambition to establish a dedicated Secretariat, despite financial constraints.
Dr. Abiodun expressed confidence in achieving this goal through member contributions, external support, and diligent fundraising efforts over the next two years.
He also highlighted ongoing plans for the SSANU Estate, aimed at providing accessible land ownership opportunities through installment payments.
The newly elected officers include Mr. Akinyemi Oluseyi as Vice Chairperson, Mr. Babarinde Taiwo as Secretary, Mrs. Rojaiye Omowunmi as Treasurer, Mr. Sogbesan Abimbola as Assistant Secretary, and Mr. Arigbabu Opeoluwa as Trustee.
Unopposed positions were secured by Mr. Fakayode Lateef as PRO, Mrs. Olatunji Oluwaseun as Financial Secretary, Mr. Okeowo Adegboyega as Ex-officio, and Mrs. Sonde Victoria as Women Coordinator, underscoring broad support for continuity and effective governance.
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Abiodun pledged unwavering commitment to advancing SSANU OOU’s interests and assured members of his administration’s dedication to enhancing welfare provisions and maintaining constructive engagement with university management.
He called for unity among all union members, extending a hand of collaboration to those who contested and others committed to the union’s progress.
As SSANU OOU embarks on a new chapter under re-elected leadership, expectations are high for sustained growth, improved welfare packages, and strengthened advocacy efforts on behalf of its esteemed members.
The union remains poised to navigate challenges, implement transformative initiatives, and uphold its pivotal role in promoting the rights and interests of university staff within the higher education sector.
