In a major call for reform, stakeholders within The Scout Association of Nigeria (TSAN) have demanded a comprehensive overhaul of the organisation’s governance structure, citing the need to enhance transparency and accountability.
This demand was made during a virtual stakeholders meeting, which drew participants from across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
During the meeting, stakeholders expressed dissatisfaction with the current leadership, accusing it of poor governance and failing to uphold international best practices and the policies laid out by the association.
The group, which comprised former and current National Board members, National Executive Committee members, State Scout Commissioners, and youth representatives, criticised the leadership’s failure to administer the organisation effectively.
One of the key grievances was the alleged gross violation of internal control systems.
The stakeholders lamented that the organisation’s youth programme was substandard, and they pointed to a lack of oversight by the National Scout Board as a contributing factor.
Many at the meeting lamented the deplorable state of the association’s governance structures under the current leadership.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, the stakeholders offered their full support for the youth-led intervention that recently secured a court injunction to halt the association’s planned Annual General Meeting (AGM) and elections, which were scheduled to take place in Makurdi, Benue State.
They called on all state delegates to boycott the AGM to avoid being in contempt of the court ruling.
The criticisms extended to specific leaders within TSAN.
Speakers at the meeting rated the performance of key figures, including Chief Commissioner Mr. Dave Awunah, National Executive Commissioner Mr. Babatunde Oyetayo, and the National Scout Board led by retired Justice Dodo, as inadequate over the past six years.
They called on responsible Scout leaders to stand up against what they described as the ongoing deterioration of the association.
