Hundreds of Kano residents have been thronging a muddy pool in the Hotoron Arewa area on the outskirts of the city, where water is reportedly seeping from markings believed by locals to be the sacred footprints of Prophet Muhammad.
The site, now resembling a spiritual healing ground, has drawn people from within and outside the state—many of them battling illnesses and convinced of the water’s purported healing powers.
In a video seen by PLATFORM TIMES, scores of men, women, and children were seen jostling and pushing to access the dirty water.
Some scooped it into plastic bottles, others drank directly with their hands, while many poured it over their bodies in ritualistic bathes, chanting and praying.
“This is now a daily occurrence,” a local told SaharaReporters under condition of anonymity.
“People believe this water can cure them. Some even say they saw the Prophet’s footprints, and that’s where the water is coming from.”
While there is no religious or scientific verification of the claims, the narrative has gained traction via social media, triggering what residents describe as a “mini-pilgrimage site.”
“Entire families are coming here now. Some have brought sick relatives and even set up camp, hoping for miracles,” the source added.
Eyewitnesses say the situation is becoming increasingly chaotic and dangerous, as people scramble for access in what often turns into a frenzied scene.
The videos show people shoving and elbowing through the crowd, raising fears of a potential stampede or outbreak of disease due to the unsanitary conditions.
As of the time of filing this report, there had been no official response from the Kano State Government, health officials, or religious leaders on the phenomenon or measures to regulate the crowd.
Public health experts have, however, repeatedly warned against reliance on unclean water sources, especially for those with underlying health conditions, due to risks of infection and waterborne diseases.
