An Islamic scholar, Sheikh Hammid Yusuf Aderemi, has urged Nigerian youths to remain steadfast in their faith despite the growing pressures of globalisation, moral decline and the digital revolution.
Sheikh Aderemi gave the charge at the closing ceremony of the four-day National Islamic Training Programme (NITP) organised by The Muslim Congress (TMC) at Vanguards Academy, Odosengolu, via Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, on Saturday.
Delivering a lecture titled “Challenges of the Contemporary Time as It Affects the Youth,” the cleric warned that the 21st century poses serious moral and social challenges to young people, stressing that discipline, sound knowledge and God-consciousness were critical tools for navigating modern realities.
According to him, while technology and globalisation offer opportunities, they also expose youths to negative influences capable of weakening faith and values if not properly guided.
The annual programme, which marked the 32nd edition of the NITP, attracted over 2,000 delegates who camped simultaneously across Ogun, Edo and Oyo states, as well as the Federal Capital Territory.
Earlier, the Amir (President) of TMC, Alhaji Taiwo AbdulWasii Bangbala, commended participants for their discipline and high standards of conduct throughout the camping exercise.
Bangbala urged them to reflect the lessons learnt at the programme in their daily lives and interactions, describing character and selflessness as core values of Islam.
He also singled out a delegate from Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, Mr AbdulHakeem Jumah, for special commendation, citing his quiet habit of picking and properly disposing of litter around the camp kitchen without seeking attention.
The event also featured the presentation of awards to winners of the National Qur’anic Competition held as part of the programme. Abdul Sanur Adebayo from Ondo State emerged winner, Ukba Abdulakeem from Ogun State came second, while Saheed Abdul Rahman from Lagos State placed third.
Organisers said the competition was designed to promote Qur’anic memorisation and preserve the pristine teachings of Islam.
On the sidelines of the programme, TMC unveiled its digital portal, described as a one-stop platform for accessing the organisation’s services and activities.
Introducing the platform, the Naibul Amir (Vice President), Administration, Alhaji Mikail Oriolowo Animashaun, said members would be able to upload their data and access congress services online.
The portal was later demonstrated by the National Information and Communication Technology Officer, Ustadh AbdulAzeez Aderopo.
The theme of the 2025 NITP was “Guidance and Direction for Today’s Muslims.”
The four-day camping programme, held from December 24 to December 28, featured soul-lifting lectures, games, personality development sessions and career talks.
The exercise climaxed with the inauguration of national and state leaders of the organisation, during which the Amir, Alhaji Taiwo Hassan Adeshina, was returned, alongside the inauguration of wulats (coordinators) and secretaries across TMC’s operating states.
