Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed that the late Stella Obasanjo left “no stone unturned” in her efforts to secure his release from prison during the military rule of General Sani Abacha.
Speaking on Wednesday at the commissioning of the renovated 250-bed Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Benin City, the ex-president recounted Stella’s relentless visits to world leaders and her steadfast determination to see him freed.
Obasanjo, who was imprisoned in 1995 under charges of plotting a coup against the Abacha regime, recalled how Stella traveled across continents, lobbying leaders in Europe, Asia, the Vatican, and beyond to advocate for his release.
“She went to Japan, the entire Europe, the Vatican, Latin America, and through Africa,” Obasanjo said. “She left no stone unturned for my release, and God answered her prayers and the prayers of all those who were praying.
On his part, Governor Obaseki, said the upgrade of the hospital to a world-class hospital was prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic when it was used as an isolation centre for patients.
Obaseki said during that period, the hospital became a vital 300-bed isolation centre with an additional 20-bed emergency isolation unit.
He said the hospital is equipped with the state-of-the-art modern medical facilities that can treat any ailments.
