A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Hon. Tolu Philips, has called on Nigerian youths to abandon the trend of seeking opportunities abroad—popularly known as “japa”—and instead focus on rebuilding the country.
Philips emphasized that the future of Nigeria lies in the hands of the youth, who he described as crucial to national development.
Philips made the statement on Sunday in Abeokuta while receiving the South West Young Political Icon Award at an event organized by Synergy, a group promoting youth engagement in politics and social development.
He urged the younger generation to channel their energy into reviving Nigeria’s fortunes instead of fleeing the country in search of greener pastures.
“I am deeply honoured to receive this award, especially from a group of young people,” Philips said.
“It gives me hope that the future of Nigeria is bright when I see youths organizing such impactful events. We must all play our part to make our nation work.”
The former House of Representatives candidate in the last general election stressed the importance of collective effort, urging youths to resist the temptation of the “japa” syndrome and instead focus on contributing to the development of Nigeria.
“Our young ones should stop this mass exodus and think of how we can collectively uplift our country. We can achieve a lot if we remain focused and committed to our goals—our motherland, Nigeria,” he added.
Philips also highlighted the need for Nigeria’s brightest minds to stay and contribute to the country’s growth, stating that the migration of talented youths to other countries leaves a gap in the nation’s development.
The Synergy Awards, held annually, aim to recognize and encourage young people in higher institutions, politics, and social spheres across the country, emphasizing their role in shaping Nigeria’s future.
