A 10-year-old boy was on Friday tragically killed by a stray bullet while a woman sustained serious injuries during a wedding celebration in the Magama Jibia area of Katsina State.

PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the incident occurred at about 2:50 p.m. in Unguwar Liman, when a member of the Nigerian Hunter Group, identified as Adamu Idris, allegedly fired a locally made gun into the air in celebration during a wedding fatiha.

The bullet reportedly struck the young boy, Malam Yusuf, in the stomach, while a 25-year-old woman, Shamsiyya Salisu, was hit in the waist. Both victims were rushed to the General Hospital, Jibia, by residents and police officers.

Doctors confirmed the boy dead on arrival, while the woman remains hospitalised and is receiving treatment.

Eyewitnesses described the moment as “chaotic and horrifying,” lamenting the use of firearms during social events.

The Katsina State Police Command has confirmed the incident and disclosed that the suspect, 45-year-old Idris, has been arrested.

Spokesperson for the Command said that one locally made rifle, one live cartridge, and an expended cartridge were recovered from the suspect.

“Preliminary investigation is ongoing. The suspect will be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation,” the police added.

Community leaders have expressed outrage over the tragedy and have called on traditional rulers and security agencies to enforce stricter measures against the use of firearms at public gatherings.

“This senseless culture of firing guns at weddings must stop,” a resident said. “We cannot continue to lose lives to careless celebrations.”
