The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has made a powerful call to end the practice of children begging in the streets, asserting that true education cannot be achieved under such conditions.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Zamfara State Almajiri Integrated Qur’anic Education Center in Gummi on Sunday, the Sultan stressed the importance of providing a conducive learning environment for children.
“I am not a politician, but I’m here because of the importance I attach to this programme for the community at large,” the Sultan remarked.
He highlighted that while Qur’anic schools are essential for imparting religious education and values, the prevalent issue of begging among almajiri students needs urgent attention.
The Sultan emphasized the critical role of integrated schools in addressing the needs of society.
He believes that these institutions can significantly reduce the number of out-of-school children and end the practice of begging in the name of learning.
“Every government must put education at the forefront, believing that all good things come from education and all bad from ignorance,” he asserted.
Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, who was also present at the event, reiterated the state government’s commitment to safeguarding the future of its younger population by creating an enabling environment for their growth and development.
“The center we are inaugurating is a World Bank intervention project through the State Universal Education Board (SUBEB), and two more will be constructed in Gusau and Kaura Namoda,” the governor announced.
The newly inaugurated center boasts six classrooms, each with a capacity of 45 students, 130 double bed spaces, 12 toilet facilities, and a kitchen.
Additionally, a vocational center has been established to train children in various skills such as woodworking, sewing, and masonry.
Governor Lawal assured the public of the government’s commitment to providing adequate feeding and other necessities for the students’ well-being.
In honour of the Sultan’s contributions, the governor named the center after Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar III.
The event also saw the inauguration of the upgraded and renovated General Hospital in Nasarwa Burkullu in the Bukkuyum Local Government Area, as well as the Maru General Hospital, which also underwent renovations.
