The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has called on Nigerians to intensify prayers for the country and its leaders, asserting that “nothing lasts forever” amid the ongoing challenges.
The monarch, who made the appeal during a conference on Monday, urged religious leaders to avoid misleading their followers for personal gain, instead encouraging them to promote peace and resilience.
Speaking at the Regional Conference on Climate Change-Induced Conflicts in Northern Nigeria, organized by the Kaduna State Bureau of Interfaith in partnership with International Alert, the Sultan highlighted the significance of unity in overcoming the region’s issues.
He stressed that Nigeria, particularly the North, faces multifaceted challenges, from poverty and insecurity to a lack of awareness about climate change.
“Do your best in worshipping Allah and leave the rest to Him,” the Sultan said. “Don’t follow those who will lead you astray.
“Many things have been happening in this country, and we believe we must return to Allah. Intensify prayers for our country in all mosques. I won’t mention churches because the CAN President is here, and I believe he will say the same.”
Acknowledging public concerns over Nigeria’s situation, he reassured Nigerians that relief would eventually come.
“A lot of people say we have never had it so bad, but no matter how difficult things are, relief will come. We believe that nothing lasts forever — neither bad times nor good times,” he added.
The Sultan called on Nigerians to pray sincerely for their leaders rather than criticize them, emphasizing the importance of accountability to God over public judgment. “Let us fear Allah in whatever we do and pray for our country. We are blessed; travel to other countries and see.
“Yes, we face challenges, but nothing lasts forever. With hard work and commitment, we can become a better country,” he remarked.
Reflecting on the issues facing the North, he emphasized that the region once known for peace and prosperity is now grappling with poverty and insecurity.
According to him, misinformation and divisive tactics are undermining the unity needed to confront these challenges.
“Our gathering here is a unifying event for us as one family in the North,” the Sultan said. “There are many misunderstandings and misrepresentations from those trying to divide us.
“They know the North’s strength is significant, not only in Nigeria but globally. If we are united, we can confront any challenge.”
In his remarks, the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Most Reverend Dr. D.C. Okoh, echoed the Sultan’s sentiments.
He noted that climate change has created a humanitarian crisis in the North, requiring immediate action.
Dr. Okoh advocated addressing conflict sources such as poverty, inequality, and resource access, underscoring the need to educate communities on the impacts of climate change and the value of environmental stewardship.
