The Sultan of Sokoto and Chairman of the National Traditional Rulers Council of Nigeria, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, on Saturday, paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
The monarch, who had been in the South-West since Thursday for the coronation of former Oyo State Governor, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, visited the Adetona royal household to commiserate with the family of the revered traditional ruler.
The Sultan, accompanied by the President of the Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN), Alhaji Rasaki Oladejo, and other Muslim leaders, was received by Prince Saud Adedire Adetona, heir of the royal family, before proceeding to the tomb of the late Awujale, where prayers were offered for the repose of his soul.
Oba Adetona, one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarchs, died on July 13, 2025, the same day former President Muhammadu Buhari passed away, at the age of 91.
The Sultan and his entourage were later hosted to a modest reception attended by prominent Ijebu indigenes, including the Regent of Ijebuland, Olor’ogun Dr. Sonny Folorunso Kuku, the Olori Omo Oba of Ijebuland, Dr. Kunle Hassan, as well as two widows of the late Awujale, Olori Iyabode Adetona and Olori Modupe Adetona.
Regent Kuku, who welcomed the Sultan, described his visit as a mark of solidarity and friendship between the North and South, noting their personal connection as old students of King’s College, Lagos, and Barewa College, Zaria, respectively.
“It is with great honour that I welcome Your Eminence to Ijebuland. Your presence is a testament to the bond of brotherhood that unites our people. We are deeply touched by your decision to stand with us in this moment of grief,” the Regent said.
In his remarks, Sultan Abubakar described the late monarch as “a brother and friend” whose legacy of service would not be forgotten. He urged the family and people of Ijebuland to remain united during the interregnum and in the process of selecting a new Awujale.
“Let us continue to pray for our late monarch anytime we have the opportunity — during our daily prayers, Jumu’ah prayers — because that is what we owe our departed leaders,” he said.
He added: “We pray to Almighty Allah to grant Ijebuland an Awujale who will surpass the achievements of Oba Adetona, unite the community, the South-West, and indeed the entire country.”
The Sultan further advised the royal family to preserve unity and peace in Ijebuland, stressing that “every development begins from the family unit.”
The condolence visit attracted eminent personalities across Ijebuland, reinforcing the late Awujale’s stature as one of Nigeria’s most respected monarchs.
