The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has urged the Nigerian Army to avoid tribalism, warning that allowing such influences could lead to divisions within the military and the broader Nigerian society.
The Sultan made these remarks on Wednesday during the commissioning of the newly constructed Nigerian Army Armoured Corps Headquarters complex in Bauchi.
Reflecting on the country’s past, the Sultan lamented the growing emphasis on tribal and religious identities within the army.
“You are in the military now, and so many things have been geared towards where you come from, who is a Muslim, who is a Christian, who is Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba in the country,” he said.
“We never knew these things so many years ago. Please, don’t allow this to creep into the army, for that would be one thing that would divide the army and even the country.”
Furthermore, the Sultan called on citizens to refrain from maligning military personnel who are engaged in various operations aimed at restoring peace across the nation.
He stressed the importance of public support and prayers for the military, stating, “Nigerians need to help and pray for the military because without security, we cannot even go to sleep, we cannot go to our work, and even go to worship centres.”
