Armed assailants suspected to be herders launched a brazen attack on private hostels housing students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), resulting in the tragic deaths of two individuals and widespread theft of valuables.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the incident occurred last Monday in communities surrounding the Stadium Area of Ogbomoso town, Oyo State.
It was further learnt that the attackers, armed with firearms and machetes, targeted several hostels accommodating LAUTECH students.
Witnesses reported that the assailants forcefully entered rooms, looting expensive phones and other personal belongings.
Eyewitness testimonies revealed a scene of chaos and fear as students recounted being assaulted and robbed. One student described the ordeal:
“They only robbed the first and the second buildings. They collected phones and some other things. As they collected phones, they were also collecting passwords. And they beat people who did not want to release their phones.”
Tragically, the violence escalated further as the attackers reportedly took the lives of at least two individuals in a community near the Under G area of the town. The exact circumstances surrounding the fatalities remain under investigation.
Expressing their anguish and distress, students took to social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), to highlight the escalating insecurity around the campus. Calls for improved security measures resonated widely among the student community and concerned citizens alike.
In a video shared on X, a student captured the aftermath of the attack, underscoring the pervasive sense of insecurity plaguing the campus.
“Lautech students are getting robbed almost every day,” lamented one post, reflecting the growing frustration and plea for urgent intervention.
Despite efforts to notify local security outfits such as Amotekun, initial attempts to confirm their response to the incidents were inconclusive.
Amotekun’s spokesperson, Mrs Ayolola Adedoja, indicated she was unaware of the attacks during a conversation with SaharaReporters.
Efforts to reach the Oyo State Police Command for official comment were unsuccessful as calls to the command spokesperson, Adewale Osifeso, went unanswered.
