A suspected motorcycle thief, identified as Hashiru, lost his life while attempting to steal a motorcycle in the Kango community, Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Eyewitnesses reported that the incident occurred at about 11:12 p.m. on Wednesday when Hashiru scaled the fence of one Isaac Ishaku’s residence.
Inside the compound, he allegedly attempted to steal a brand-new motorcycle parked on the premises.
However, a dog in the compound raised an alarm, drawing the attention of the household.
According to Usman Ibrahim, a resident, the suspect panicked and tried to escape by climbing back over the fence but fell, hitting his head on a large stone used as a makeshift ladder.
“He sustained severe head injuries in the process,” Ibrahim said.
Members of the local vigilante group, who arrived at the scene shortly after, attempted to rush the injured suspect to a nearby clinic, but he succumbed to his injuries en route.
A vigilante member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that Hashiru was a notorious figure in the area, previously arrested multiple times for stealing motorcycles.
“This was not his first time. He had been arrested more than three times for similar offences in Kuje,” the vigilante member said.
The remains of the deceased have since been handed over to his family in the neighboring Kusaki village.
Efforts to get a comment from the FCT Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Adeh Josephine, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
