Former Sokoto State governor and serving senator, Aminu Tambuwal, has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of attempting to smear his public service record through what he described as politically motivated harassment.
Tambuwal, who was released on bail on Thursday after spending a night in EFCC custody, told supporters at a reception in Sokoto that he would not be blackmailed or intimidated by the anti-graft agency.
He said he honoured the EFCC’s invitation voluntarily on August 6 and again on August 11, but was shocked when the commission demanded sureties instead of granting him bail on personal recognisance.
“I told them I have been Speaker for four years, governor for eight years, and now a senator. I am a Commander of the Federal Republic and deserve respect,” Tambuwal said.
According to him, the EFCC chairman insisted on two federal directors as sureties with letters of introduction, ignoring pleas from his lawyer, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, to relax the conditions.
“They took me to cell A23, where I rested till the next morning,” he narrated.
The former governor, now a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) opposition coalition, questioned the timing of his arrest, alleging that it was part of a broader scheme to weaken the opposition.
“Why now? Why at this moment? The Sokoto State government tried a kangaroo commission of inquiry and failed. Now, the EFCC is being used,” he claimed.
Tambuwal accused the Bola Tinubu administration of shielding its allies from prosecution while targeting opponents.
“Once you join APC, all your sins are forgiven. Is that what we must do to be safe? Nigerians are not fools,” he said.
He also faulted the government’s appointments for breaching the federal character principle and criticised its policies as anti-people.
“The 2023 election was rigged. We won’t allow that in 2027. By the grace of God, we will end this misgovernance,” Tambuwal vowed.
