In a major political shake-up in Taraba State, Governor Dr Agbu Kefas on Sunday formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the move was driven by his desire to align with President Bola Tinubu’s development vision for the country.
Kefas completed his defection after registering as an APC member and receiving his membership card at a brief ceremony conducted by executives of the party in the state.
The governor disclosed that a public declaration ceremony to formally announce his switch would be held in the coming days.
Speaking shortly after his registration, Kefas said his decision followed extensive consultations and was guided by what he described as the overriding interest of Taraba State.
According to him, aligning with the ruling party at the centre would enhance his administration’s capacity to attract federal projects, investments and critical infrastructure to the state.
“My decision to join the APC is informed by the need to properly align Taraba State with the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu. This alignment will help us unlock more opportunities for development and deliver greater dividends of democracy to our people,” the governor said.
Kefas added that his administration remained committed to inclusive governance and assured residents that the defection would not derail ongoing programmes and policies of his government.
The governor’s defection is expected to significantly alter the political landscape in Taraba, a state long regarded as a PDP stronghold, and may trigger fresh realignments ahead of future elections.
APC leaders in the state welcomed Kefas into the party, describing his entry as a boost to the party’s fortunes and a validation of its growing influence in the North-East.
Political observers say the move could strengthen the APC’s grip in the region while posing fresh challenges for the opposition PDP as preparations intensify for the next electoral cycle.
