The Tai Solarin Federal University of Education (TASFUED), Ijagun, Ogun State, has announced the graduation of 4,785 students, including 40 First Class degree holders, as it secured full accreditation for all its academic programmes and received approval to introduce 12 new courses.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adekunle Olanrewaju Adeogun, disclosed this on Thursday during a press briefing ahead of the institution’s 17th convocation ceremony, describing the developments as a major boost to the university’s academic standing.
Adeogun said the National Universities Commission had granted the institution 100 per cent accreditation across its programmes and approved 12 new courses spread across four colleges — Vocational and Technological Education, Social and Management Sciences, Science and Information Technology, and Agriculture and Hospitality Management — alongside four new doctoral programmes.
He added that entrepreneurship had been introduced as a full degree programme, supported by a dedicated centre aimed at promoting innovation, job creation and skills development, while smart classrooms and digital pedagogy were being deployed to enhance teaching and learning outcomes.
The vice-chancellor said the university’s recent adoption by the Federal Government and its 20th anniversary celebration had further strengthened its national relevance, infrastructural development and positioning in teacher education.
“We currently enjoy 100 per cent accreditation across all our programmes. Our curricula have been reviewed in line with global best practices, with strong emphasis on STEM education, digital learning, entrepreneurship and inclusive education,” Adeogun said.
On staff development, he revealed that five academic staff benefited from international training programmes, 70 from conference sponsorships, 28 from institution-based research grants, two from national research funds, while more than 600 non-teaching staff underwent various capacity-building programmes.
Adeogun said the institution had also invested heavily in infrastructure and ICT development, including new lecture theatres, laboratories and e-learning platforms, while maintaining industrial harmony and a stable academic calendar.
He added that TASFUED had expanded partnerships with organisations such as Dufil Prima Foods, Polaris Bank and the Nigeria Conservation Foundation, particularly in entrepreneurship development and environmental sustainability initiatives.
The vice-chancellor acknowledged the donation of five minibuses, solar-powered streetlights and laptops by the Senator representing Ogun West, Senator Olamilekan Adeola; a fully equipped staff club by Chief Dotun Sanusi of Ilaji Hotels and Resorts; a statue of Tai Solarin by art collector, Chief Yemisi Shyllon; and an ongoing staff guest house by Dr Taiwo Afolabi, Chairman of SIFAX Group.
On student and alumni achievements, Adeogun said a postgraduate student, Adeola Olufunke Akinsulure, recently emerged as a Top 10 finalist for the Global Teacher Prize, while alumnus SP Abimbola Adebisi was appointed Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer.
He added that two members of the university community had also set Guinness World Records, Oluwatobi Oyinlola for inventing the smallest GPS tracking device prototype and Kuforiji Oluwaseun for completing the longest sewing marathon while TASFUED athletes won seven gold, five silver and two bronze medals at the last Nigerian University Games, finishing ninth out of 161 institutions.
Providing a breakdown of the graduating students, Adeogun said 1,466 earned Second Class Upper degrees, 2,768 Second Class Lower, 492 Third Class and 19 Pass degrees, while 269 part-time students and 88 Nigerian Army College of Education students would also graduate.
At the postgraduate level, he said the university would produce 356 graduates, including 90 PhDs, 85 M.Ed, 50 M.Sc, 19 M.A, 73 PGDE, 21 PGD and 13 MLIS degree holders.
He further disclosed that Bukola Ifeoluwa Osunrinde recorded a perfect CGPA of 5.0 to emerge as the best graduating student, describing the feat as a reflection of the institution’s academic rigour.
Adeogun added that as part of the convocation activities, the Visitor to the university would commission a new Computer-Based Test centre and a lecture hall built through TETFund intervention.
He said the university would also confer honorary doctorate degrees on Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, and former Ogun State Governor, Aremo Olusegun Osoba.
According to him, the convocation ceremony marks “a celebration of progress, national recognition and renewed commitment to educational excellence,” as TASFUED reaffirms its vision to remain a leading university of education in Africa.
