Can we meet you?
My name is Abdullateef Adedeji. I am the Overall Best Graduating Student of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) for the 2023/2024 academic session. I graduated from the Department of Mathematics with a CGPA of 4.91, the highest in the history of the university.
How do you feel about this great achievement?
I feel fulfilled, accomplished, and immensely grateful. It’s rewarding to see hard work and persistence pay off. However, I must acknowledge that this achievement is not solely my doing; it is by the grace and favor of God that I emerged as the Overall Best Graduating Student.
What attracted you to study Mathematics?
I initially studied Computer Science and Mathematics at the College of Education, Ilemona, Kwara State. During that time, I developed a passion for teaching Mathematics. I chose to further my studies in Mathematics Education because I enjoy teaching the subject and inspiring others to appreciate its beauty.
Who or what motivated you to achieve this remarkable success?
From the beginning, my goal was to graduate with a first-class honor. However, during my first examination at TASUED, a lecturer, Mr. Oyelade Babatunde Eriwa, encouraged me to aim higher and work toward becoming the Overall Best Graduating Student. His words planted the seed of this achievement in me. Beyond external motivation, I was driven by my commitment to excellence and the opportunities that I knew would come with such an accomplishment.
What were your toughest moments at TASUED, and how did you overcome them?
Every moment was tough because striving to be the best requires constant vigilance and effort. However, financial constraints were a major challenge. I had to take on part-time teaching jobs and sell items like pens, books, and data to support myself. Despite these hurdles, I persevered by focusing on my goals and reminding myself of the reasons I started this journey.
How did you prepare for exams to ensure you performed at your best?
I prepared for exams well in advance. Before each semester began, I reviewed the course outlines and set specific goals for each course. I didn’t just study to pass; I studied to achieve targeted grades. I also tailored my study practices to what worked best for me, avoiding unnecessary comparisons with others. This approach minimized pressure and maximized my efficiency.
Were there moments you doubted your ability to succeed? If yes, how did you push through?
Yes, I experienced doubt during my final semester exams. The semester was extremely busy as I organized a programme on campus and juggled other responsibilities. I knew that even one ‘B’ grade could jeopardize my chances of being the best graduate. To overcome this, I partnered with a coursemate, Nasiru Mariam Omowunmi, for group study sessions. Her support helped me stay focused and prepared.
Did you win any prizes at TASUED?
Yes, I received awards from the university, the state government, Capital Assurance, the Alumni Association, and other donors. These recognitions made the journey even more fulfilling.
How do you plan to use your education degree to make a positive impact?
Teaching is my passion, and I aim to inspire students to believe in the validity of their dreams. I want to show young people that they can achieve whatever they set their minds to. Additionally, I plan to contribute to teacher training and professional development, particularly in the integration of technology into education.
What does being the Overall Best Graduating Student mean to you personally?
This achievement is both a challenge and a source of joy. It reinforces the belief that the only limits to what I can achieve are those I impose on myself. It also validates the sacrifices and investments made by my family and mentors in my education.
What are your future plans or career aspirations?
Alongside maintaining my academic excellence, I’ve been training teachers on effective ways to integrate technology into their classrooms. In the future, I aim to establish an EdTech company focused on providing accessible and affordable professional development for teachers across Nigeria and Africa.
What is your advice to students aiming for first-class honours?
Have a clear vision of your goals, identify what is required to achieve them, and commit daily to those requirements. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals, and above all, trust in God. Your determination and association are crucial to your success.
If you could go back in time, is there anything you would do differently?
If given the chance, I would have sought mentorship earlier in my academic journey. Mentorship is invaluable and could have accelerated my growth in many areas.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our audience?
I owe much of my success to the supportive community at the Department of Mathematics, particularly the Head of Department, Dr. Loyinmi, and my parents, Mr. and Mrs. Adedeji, and Mr. and Mrs. Azeez. Their unwavering support kept me going. To students out there, I encourage you to dream big, work diligently, and believe in the power of your dreams. Whatever your mind can conceive and believe, you can achieve.
