In a shocking turn of events, 15-year-old Chukwudolue Chimobi, a student at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Okpugwu, Abakaliki, has taken legal action against her school’s Principal, a Catholic Reverend Sister, and a teacher over allegations of severe mental and physical harm.
The case, registered under suit no MAB/821/2023, has ignited controversy in the community.
Chimobi, who served as the school’s game prefect, claims she was brutally flogged by her teacher, Chioma Mmuo, and the school’s Principal, Reverend Sister Uchenna Esther Nwoba.
The incident reportedly stemmed from a dispute involving another student who was often sleeping in class, leading to confrontations and harsh disciplinary measures by the school authorities.
Named in the lawsuit are Reverend Sister Uchenna Nwoba (1st Defendant), Chioma Mmuo (2nd Defendant), Augustine Awuro (3rd Defendant), and Okemiri Peter (4th Defendant).
The alleged abuse took a grievous turn when, on May 26, 2023, Chimobi was subjected to 17 strokes of the cane by four male students under the supervision of Teacher Chioma Mmuo, without any prior investigation into the matter.
Chimobi’s mother, Mrs. Chukwuduloue Chinonso, who represented her daughter in the lawsuit, also claimed that she was physically assaulted and mistreated by other students when inquiring about the incident.
Attempts to seek an explanation and resolution from Principal Reverend Sister Nwoba were allegedly met with indifference, ultimately resulting in Chimobi’s suspension and the expulsion of two of her classmates involved in the incident.
The alleged beating left Chimobi with severe bruises and life-threatening scars, traumatizing her deeply.
As a result, she is demanding ₦2 million in compensation for the physical and psychological suffering and degrading treatment she endured.
Additionally, she has requested that the 2nd Defendant, Chioma Mmuo, cover the ₦50,000 medical expenses incurred by the Plaintiff.
This disturbing case is set to be heard in the Abakaliki Magistrate Court on September 28, 2023, raising concerns about the safety and well-being of students in educational institutions.
